Letter to Editor: Preserve historic buildings to revitalize communities, sustain future

A newcomer to Hopkinsville sees value in preserving Webber Building.

I am new to Hopkinsville, but I quickly became fascinated by its history and its downtown, which reminds me so much of my early 1950s childhood.

It is beyond my imagination how any body of citizens who are truly interested in the future of their community could call for the destruction of such an historic building as the Webber Building.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the first lady of historic preservation, once said, “Is it not cruel to let our city die by degrees, stripped of all her proud monuments, until there will be nothing left of all her history and beauty to inspire our children?”

Preserving historic buildings is about more than just saving old structures; it’s about connecting with the past, revitalizing communities, and ensuring a sustainable future.

A parking lot is not a sustainable future. It is an insult to our past.
