Letter to Editor: Don’t spend public money to save Webber Building

A Hopkinsville resident believes few are interested in preserving the downtown building.

I think Maggie Turner Hennessey’s desire to preserve this bit of history is admirable. However, I think she is one of only a few wanting to preserve the Webber Building.

I do not support using public funds to preserve this building. The building holds no interest for me.

The building is dilapidated and if rehabilitated would require significant ongoing expense to maintain it. Further, if rehabilitated, what will be its purpose other than for a memory? Will it be put to use by businesses, living quarters, a museum, …? Is there any purpose that would allow the building to be self-sustaining? I doubt it.

The Webber Building does not have to be preserved by using other people’s money. If anyone really wants to preserve the Webber Building, I suggest they write a check for the required funds. If they do not have the resources to preserve the building on their own, then mount a campaign to find the necessary funds from something other than government resources.

In either case, please find funds to cover both rehabilitation and maintenance in perpetuity. Failing this, it is time to let it go.
