The Salvation Army of Hopkinsville was preparing to expand its normal overnight shelter capacity Wednesday evening to accommodate anyone who might otherwise be left outside in the cold, windy conditions.
The National Weather Service predicted the overnight low would be 20 degrees and winds could gust up to 25 mph. Thursday’s low will be 16 degrees, followed by a low of 21 degrees Friday.
The Extreme Weather Event, or EWE, Shelter is available on nights when the wind chill is forecast to be below 20. It opens at 7 p.m. at 701 E. Clay Street (entrance through the Thrift Store).
“This service does not currently receive funding for operations, but we trust funds will come through to meet this crucial need,” the Salvation Army said in a Facebook post.
