Governor Andy Beshear has issued a state of emergency for the commonwealth in anticipation of the dangerous cold and wind chills approaching the state late Thursday into Friday morning.
The Governor made the announcement during a special briefing Wednesday.
During the briefing, officials encouraged people to have an emergency kit in your car and be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning from indoor heaters like kerosene and other oil-based heaters.
Transportation Secretary Jim Gray urged motorists to reschedule travel plans during the worst of the weather.
Forecasters say temperatures will plunge Thursday night as a cold blast moves into the commonwealth. High winds will make the cold weather very dangerous.

Mike is one of the few members of the NPR Board to have been elected by station petition twice, in 2014 and 2019. In August 2022, Mike was re-elected to serve a final 3-year term on the national board.
Mike holds a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism and a Masters in Mass Communication and has been honored with dozens of journalism awards by the Society for Professional Journalists and Associated Press. In 2022, Mike was named one of the Best Managers in Radio by Radio Ink Magazine for the fifth time since 2015.
