Free coronavirus testing continues in Christian County; residents urged to get tested

Public health officials are urging people to get tested for COVID-19 — in addition to frequent hand-washing, wearing a mask and social distancing — to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Some people with no symptoms have been infected but don’t know they carry the virus and could spread it to others.

The Christian County Health Department is continuing its drive-thru COVID-19 testing program.

Testing is available from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday at Tie Breaker Park, 4400 LaFayette Road.

Health department staff collect a specimen through a person’s nostril and send it to a lab to test for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. People being tested remain in their vehicle during the procedure. There is no charge for the test.

As of June 9, at least 4,103 tests had been administered in the county. Of those, 2,284 were done by the health department and 1,819 were done by Jennie Stuart Health.

Local physicians and medical clinics are also testing patients, but those numbers are not being reported.
