Flood watch issued for Hopkinsville area Wednesday through Sunday

Up to 1 foot of rainfall is not out of the question, said officials at the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch, in effect from Wednesday afternoon to Sunday morning, for Western Kentucky — and officials warn the region could get several inches of rainfall causing rivers, creaks and streams to flood.

“Preliminary projections of up to 1 foot of total rainfall over parts of the area is not out of the question,” the NWS states in the warning. Heavy rainfall over several days “will cause the risk of flash flooding and flooding to rise markedly.”

Officials add, “Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.”

According to the NWS forecast for Hopkinsville, there is a 90% chance of rain Wednesday night with the possibility of severe storms that could produce heavy rainfall. Winds will gust up to 28 mph.

Rain is likely again on Thursday and possible on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
