Church and the U.S. Constitution topic of HCC program

The Rev. Dr. Ron Buck will give the talk for the Constitution Day program on Sept. 13.

The Rev. Dr. Ron Buck will be the speaker for a Constitution Day program, “The American Church and the United States Constitution,” at noon Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Hopkinsville Community College’s Emerging Technologies Building, Anderson Hall.

Buck’s talk will also be streamed live on HCC’s Facebook page

Buck has taught history and religion at colleges in Tennessee and Kentucky, including HCC. He is a former minister of Hopkinsville’s First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He’s currently the senior minister of Collierville Christian Church in the Memphis region.

Ken Casey, HCC professor of religion and philosophy, said in an email that several questions are worth considering on the topic of religion and the constitution.

For example, does the constitution really build a wall of separation between church and state, or is that a misrepresentation of the Establishment Clause?

Also, can the religious convictions of Supreme Court justices be set aside as they consider questions about constitutionality?

The public is invited to the program. Light refreshments will be served.
