Ward 12 Councilman Phillip Brooks was named presiding officer by a unanimous Hopkinsville City Council vote Tuesday night.

The presiding officer runs council meetings when the mayor cannot be present. Previously, the position was called mayor pro tem.

Brooks’ selection was expected after the council agreed during its last Committee of the Whole meeting on Jan. 20 to name him presiding officer.

He will serve as the council’s presiding officer through Dec. 31. Brooks, a Democrat, is a schoolteacher.
