Rodney Coates

Rodney Coates is Professor of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He is a public sociologist engaged in critical race, social justice, social movements, social policy, and practice. Being a public sociologist for Coates means that his work must impact the wider communities, both within and outside the university. Coates has conducted bias training for school districts, municipalities, police, and universities. He also works with local communities, corporations, and Miami University to establish pathways to progress for underrepresented students in STEM, business, and law.

Freedom was not just confined to physical enslavement, but mental enslavement as well, bound in the laws that barred enslaved people from receiving an education in Southern states, writes scholar Rodney Coates.
