Craig Berkman is founder and CEO of the Free at Last Coalition, which was formed to close the slavery loophole in the U.S. Constitution’s 13th Amendment and complete the course begun by President Lincoln’s signing the Emancipation Proclamation.

Section 23 of the state Constitution prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude “except as a punishment for a crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.”
