Hopkinsville museum calendar packed with programs in August

Topic range from summer cooking and horse racing, to aliens, historic preservation and two of the city’s best known creatives. 

The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County will host six programs between Aug. 14 and 28 on topics ranging from summer cooking and horse racing, to aliens, historic preservation and two of the city’s best known creatives. 

The programs include:

The Supper Club

  • 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Pennyroyal Area Museum — featuring Margaret Prim preparing summer favorites. Tickets, $10, are available online

bell hooks Book Club

  • 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the Pennyroyal Area Museum — an informal group that meets monthly to discuss writer bell hooks and her extensive work. This session will focus on Chapters 6 and 7 in “All About Love: New Visions.” 

Saturday Sleuths: Alien Art Invasion

  • 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Pennyroyal Area Museum — for children ages 6 to 12 who act as detectives to solve a history mystery. The 1955 Kelly alien story will provide inspiration for this session. 

Paint Like Gant Paint Party

  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, Pennyroyal Area Museum — in conjunction with Hopkinsville Art Guild’s Christian County Art Loop, this event will let participants paint designs inspired by Gant Gaither and his Zoophisticates collection. Pre-sketched canvases and other supplies will be provided with museum admission. 

Preservation Workshop

  • 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Christian County Courthouse — preservationist and artist Grace Abernethy will lead a tour and discussion of the courthouse with a focus on the interior details that add to its historic integrity. This is a free workshop.
