HCC awards Spirit Cup to Elkton man during commencement

The college's class of 2021 had more than 400 graduates.

An Elkton student received Hopkinsville Community College’s Spirit Cup during commencement ceremonies over the weekend. Anthony Morin, who graduated with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Industrial Maintenance Technology, received the award, the college announced.

The Spirit Cup is a tradition that dates to the old Bethel College and has continued every year at HCC since the community college had its first commencement in 1967. It is given by the Alpha Delta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

In a nomination letter, one of Morin’s professors wrote, “… I often used his work as both the solutions to send out to students as well as examples of what high-quality work was supposed to look like. The projects he came up with were so clever, well-thought-out and expertly done that I have used many of them when I present at conferences across the country. Many teachers are getting examples to share in their classes due to Anthony’s outstanding work.”

HCC’s class of 2021 had 405 graduates. The college conducted commencement across three ceremonies on Friday and Saturday in the Thomas L. Riley Lecture Hall to ensure enough space for social distancing.

Others recognized with special awards included:

  • Janae Bracey, of Hopkinsville, and Morin were named to the Kentucky Community and Technical College System All-Academic Team.
  • In the nursing program, Isabella Blu received the Spirit of Nightingale Award and Kelly Lusch was named Outstanding Nursing Student.
