Downtown streets closing Friday for Picnic with Pops

Sixth Street beside the Arthur Square parking lot will be closed at 2 p.m., followed by the closure of Main Street between Fifth and Seventh streets at 4 p.m.

Final preparations are underway for Friday’s Picnic with the Pops, featuring the Fabulous Equinox Orchestra playing on Sixth Street.

Sponsored by the Pennyroyal Arts Council, the outdoor event will start at 5:30 p.m. in Arthur Square on Sixth Street and in the surrounding area in front of the Alhambra Theatre and the courthouse on Main Street.

The Arthur Square parking lot, where the band will play, will close early Friday morning, said Margaret Prim, executive director of the arts council. Sixth Street from Main to Virginia streets will close to traffic at 2 p.m., and Main Street from Fifth to Seventh streets will close at 4 p.m.

A check-in booth for ticket-holders will be outside the Alhambra’s main entrance. All table seating is sold out, but tickets are still available for lawn chair seating in front of the courthouse. Audience members should bring their own lawn chairs.

A silent auction of donated art will run from 5:30 to 9 p.m. inside the Alhambra. Cash bars will be set up outside and in the theater. The band will begin playing at 7:30 p.m.
