Four of the seven Republican primary races for Hopkinsville City Council went against the incumbents in Tuesday’s election, according to preliminary results from the Christian County Clerk’s Office.
Ward 1 Councilwoman Natasha Francis lost to challenger Vance Smith.
Ward 9 Councilwoman Jamie Lynn Lienberger lost to Brittanie Bogard.
Ward 10 Councilman Steve Keel lost to Michael A. Velez Sr.
Ward 12 Council Matthew Handy lost to Elizabeth Draude.
The incumbent Republicans who held off a challenger were Chuck Crabtree, who beat Faye Hendricks in a close race for the Ward 4 seat, and Amy Craig, who defeated Shannon Trodden in Ward 5.
In the Ward 7 Republican primary, where incumbent Doug Wilcox did not seek re-election, the former city police chief, Clayton Sumner, beat Mark Graham.
There were two contested council races among Democrats. In Ward 9, Angelique Victor defeated Ardell Owens and Monica Love. In Ward 10, Andra Gold beat Angelita Atkins.
Approximately 6% of Christian County’s 50,270 registered voters cast a ballot in the election, said County Clerk Melinda Humphries.
Although voter turnout was extremely light, Humphries said it was good practice for poll workers who can expect a much larger turnout in November with the presidential election.
“We want them to be ready for November, which we anticipate will be extremely busy,” she said.
In the presidential races, presumptive nominees Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump each carried their respective primary contest in Christian County by a wide margin.
