Amy Craig

Republican

candidate for

City Council,
Ward 5
Amy Craig, 47, of Morris Circle, is seeking her fourth term on Hopkinsville City Council. She chairs the council’s Committee of the Whole and the Future Funding Committee. She has been a teacher at University Heights Academy for four years.

Which electoral system do you support for the city of Hopkinsville? Why?

Nonpartisan elections. My main concern with partisan elections is that voters are limited in the primary election to the party in which they are registered. This is especially problematic for independent voters. I feel that all voters, regardless of their political party, should be able to vote for the person that they would like to represent them and their ideals.

What plans do you have to address blight and dilapidated structures in the city?

I would like to continue to see more dilapidated structures demolished. This takes a lot of effort and money, but I do feel that we are on the right track.

If elected, how would you help address the housing shortage?

Unfortunately we are facing a nation wide housing shortage that has been heightened by COVID-19. I will continue to support affordable housing for all income levels. I also support incentives to builders for new, affordable construction.

If elected, how would you work together with government, nonprofit and business leaders to encourage economic development?

I will continue to support ongoing and effective communication between government, nonprofit, and business leaders. I also support a multifaceted approach to educational opportunities that naturally increase job opportunities.

If elected, how would you prioritize the reduction of gun violence in Hopkinsville?

I feel that the best way to help reduce gun violence is to ensure that we have enough properly trained police officers and that they are equipped with all the tools that they need to keep our city safe.

If elected, how would you work to revitalize downtown Hopkinsville?

I feel that downtown Hopkinsville is the heart of the city and I feel that it is crucial that we do all we can to continue the revitalization efforts. I would like to continue to provide tax incentives to encourage business growth in our downtown renaissance district.

Is there another issue not addressed in these questions that you believe is extremely important? If so, please explain it briefly.

Hopkinsville continues to have a rich history of diversity. I feel that diversity makes us beautifully unique and I would like to see more opportunities for all backgrounds to have their voices heard.
